Located at No. 55, Daquan Street, Guangfu Township, Hualien County, the Mataian Ecological Park, covering approximately 12 hectares, is a natural spring wetland and home to the Mataian tribe of the Amis people, where they have been fishing and farming for generations. The park's name, "Mataian," comes from the Amis word "vataan," meaning tree bean, and is named after the tree bean that was once prevalent in the area.
The park boasts a rich variety of aquatic plants and wildlife, including the little egret, red-crested moorhen, and red-tailed shrike, making it a key birdwatching destination in eastern Taiwan. The wetland's water source, derived from the upper reaches of the Mataian River, is clear, and the soil, primarily sandy loam, is ideal for the growth of aquatic life.
Special activities include experiencing the traditional Amis fishing method of "Bala-Gao," where a three-layered structure constructed from natural materials is placed in the stream, catching fish while also protecting the ecosystem. The park also features the Mataian Wetland Ecological Museum, a cultural and historical studio, and an Aboriginal restaurant offering specialties such as stone hot pot, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the beauty of nature and culture.
