Alishan Forest Recreation Area (Southern Taiwan)

Sunrise, sea of clouds, railway, forest, and sunset—when you think of Alishan, its five wonders always come to mind. At dawn, the sun gracefully leaps over the mountaintop, heralding a new day. In the evening, the vibrant orange sunset offers a whole new kind of breathtaking spectacle. The Alishan Sea of Clouds, one of Taiwan's Eight Scenic Spots, is typically seen at sunrise or dusk on clear, cloud-filled days. Autumn is the perfect season for viewing the sea of clouds. Alishan is also home to one of only three remaining mountain railways in the world. Once built to transport timber, it now serves as a tourist train, carrying visitors through the forest. Those who prefer not to take the train can also enjoy the trails, immersing themselves in nature, absorbing the rich phytoncides, and experiencing the enchanting beauty of the alpine forest.

Going up the foothills, the forest vegetation changes with the increase in altitude, including subtropical broad-leaved forest (Ficus nanmu forest belt), warm broad-leaved forest (Castanopsis pilosula forest belt), cool temperate coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (oak belt or fog forest belt), cold temperate mountain coniferous forest (Tsuga forest belt), bamboo forest, mountain jute, camphor tree, green oak, red cypress, xiaonan, fragrant fir, Taiwan fir, Taiwan cypress, spruce, and Tsuga. From time to time, you can smell the unique fragrance released by the forest tree species, and you will feel refreshed when you walk into the woods.

The welcoming arrival of mountain cherry blossoms in late winter marks the start of the flower season. Yoshino cherry blossoms, which begin blooming in early March and last for a month, dominate the Alishan flower season. In late spring, peach blossoms take over. During this time, the valley is ablaze with vibrant colors, reminiscent of a paradise. The dazzling spectacle often draws pause for admiration.
