Dream Lake is located at the southeastern foot of Qixing Mountain, approximately 860 meters above sea level. Its formation is unclear, but it may be a crater lake, water accumulation in a depression caused by fumaroles, or a depression between volcanoes. A rare aquatic fern, Taiwan Isoetes, grows in the lake. This plant is extremely rare, as it grows at very low latitudes worldwide. To protect this national treasure, Dream Lake has been designated an ecological reserve.
The lake is off-limits to the general public, but a platform provides a panoramic view. Autumn and winter are dry, and the lake often dries up. Spring and summer bring heavy downpours, but after the rainy season or heavy downpours, the lake overflows. When shrouded in mist, the lake and mountains appear hazy and ethereal, creating a dreamlike scene.
