Giant Trees Trail (Southern Taiwan)

Contents Summary Contents Summary Contents Summary

Since the removal of the sacred tree, a symbolic spiritual landmark, the Alishan National Scenic Area Administration has constructed two giant tree boardwalks above Shenmu Station, nestled among a forest of over thirty giant trees. These boardwalks are lined with red cypress trees, each with a number and an information sign detailing its age, girth, height, and species. The two boardwalks, approximately 1,100 meters in total, are constructed from rot-resistant timber overhead, rising through the lush forest like giant dragons, guarding the vibrant, thousand-year-old red cypress forest.

The entrance to the first Giant Tree Trail is located directly above the fallen sacred tree. The trail, stretching over 600 meters, winds through a forest of red cypress trees, blocking out the sun. This area boasts the highest concentration of giant trees in Taiwan. Among them is a 1,900-year-old red cypress with a chest girth of 12.1 meters and a height of 28 meters, making it the largest sacred tree here. The second Giant Tree Trail runs from Xianglin Elementary School to the Xianglin Suspension Bridge. Its location is difficult to find, so pay close attention to the signage. This trail, which winds its way through the dense, shady forest, is equally worth a visit. The refreshing green shade, rich phytoncides, penetrating sunlight, and the melodious songs of thrushes and titmice make it a truly breathtaking experience.
