Because Lugang was once primarily a trading port, the area surrounding the port became a key hub for shipping and merchants due to its convenient location. Yaolin Street, Putou Street, and Dayou Street, located near the river, became a hub for shipping and docks.
The Old Street, the main artery of the wharf area during Lukang's heyday, is now known as Putou, Yaolin, and Dayou Streets. Its winding red-brick alleys are lined with renovated old-style shophouses, each with its own intriguing interior and old-style exterior. Here, you can find some of the old Lukang's features.
Walking down the red-bricked paths of Yaolin and Putou Streets, one is instantly struck by a sense of antiquity, as if entering a time warp. The ancient houses, reminiscent of southern Fujian, the various talismans adorning the door lintels, and the couplets lining the doors, all speak to the pace and lifestyle of the olden days. In recent years, with the surge in tourism and cultural exploration, some homeowners have opened folk art shops, providing visitors with plenty of places to linger while reminiscing about their past.
The streets are exceptionally winding, sometimes even forming a series of right-angle turns. This is a testament to the wisdom of our ancestors and their adaptation to the hardships of life. Walking along the streets, carefully savor the historical stories embedded in each twist and turn. Over the course of time, the atmosphere here has evolved from its former bustling bustle to today's tranquil and relaxed atmosphere.
